Time to get on the field! GirlSports is a healthy-living initiative encouraging girls to participate in sports and develop healthy lifestyles.

With the founding of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) in 1912, Juliette Gordon Low believed health, nutrition, and fitness were essential to the Girl Scout experience. Girl Scouts hiked, played basketball, went on camping trips, and were encouraged to prepare healthy meals—all progressive initiatives for girls in that time.

Today, Girl Scouts continues to support healthy living for girls, recognizing that it inspires them to lead in all aspects of society. Indeed, Girl Scouts believes that girls who compete on the playing field succeed and lead in life.

With GirlSports, girls learn how sports, nutrition, and healthy living can help them:

  • Develop leadership skills they can use now and in the future
  • Discover how physical activity and healthy living can be part of their lifestyle
  • Learn that they can do good things for themselves and the world

GSUSA has already encouraged over 2.3 million girls to become more active and health-conscious by participating in the GirlSports initiative and earning their Legacy Athlete badges.

In Girl Scouts, girls are able to earn five Athlete badges. As they move through Girl Scouting, girls build their skills and learn how to be valuable team members—learning the rules of the game and how to play so that everyone feels included. Girl Scouts learn what it takes to support others on and off the field.
