Alumnae Story
Best Fourth of July Ever
By Connie Gross
St. Louis, Mo.
My mother was the leader of my sister's Junior troop. I was in Brownies and in second grade. It was 1976 and the bicentennial was everywhere.
Everyone in the troop dressed in period clothing, from hats and aprons on down to the shoes. We paraded with Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts around the sports stadium (Busch Stadium) in downtown St. Louis with flags held high.
Afterward, we all got to sit on the playing field and watch fireworks overhead. I remember looking around the huge playing field and seeing so many people involved in all types of scouting. I remember being so proud to be a part of the experience.
It was the best Fourth of July, and the most special, that I've ever celebrated—not only with my mom, who became my leader, my sister and my friends, but my whole Girl Scout family.
