Alumnae Story
A Lesson in Love and Understanding

As a Brownie and Girl Scout in the early to mid-1950s, I have many wonderful memories of the fun and exciting times I had. I remember selling cookies and calendars, the field trips and cookouts, etc. However, the most vivid and lasting memory I have occurred in 1953, during an overnight camp out at the Troop House in Tulsa, Okla.

There were two girls in my Girl Scout troop of the Jewish faith. The troop leader was the mother of one of these girls.

During the evening of the camp out, shortly before we turned out the lights to go to sleep, our leader conducted a Jewish service for us (complete with Menorah). She explained Jewish customs and symbols and answered our endless questions. I recall that service from so long ago very clearly and remember how interesting and educational it was to me.

I appreciate to this day my Girl Scout leader taking the time and seizing the opportunity to teach seven or eight 12-year-old girls a little about religious tolerance. I am sure that she never realized the impact and lasting impression she was making on a future generation.

Through that Jewish service 53 years ago, a Girl Scout leader gave me a lesson in love and understanding that stayed with me throughout my life. What a gift that was!

Isn't that what Girl Scouting is all about?
