Alumnae Story
My Aunt's Troop

I am writing to tell the story of how I became a Girl Scout leader.

I was never a registered Girl Scout growing up, but my favorite aunt was a Girl Scout leader in Baraboo, Wisconsin. My aunt would baby-sit my sister and I, and we had a great time when she held Girl Scout meetings. The troop was a few years older than my sister and I, but they took us in and we made cookies, went out to the campsites with them, and had a good time. The girls were very willing to let us lick the spoons for the cookies they made.

My aunt died in 1973 in her early 50s. I was only 14 at the time but the lessons I learned from her stayed with me throughout my life. I wanted my girls as well as others to enjoy the fun we had during Girl Scout meetings. Now I am the community chair for Sauk Prairie Girl Scouts and teach health and safety classes for the American Red Cross. I also work at the same hospital my aunt did. I hope the girls I have had in Girl Scouts will do the same when they get older.
