My grandmother was a Girl Scout in Michigan growing up. She moved to Nashville, Tenn., and was married. My mother — her oldest daughter — was a Girl Scout in the Cumberland Valley Council. She was selected to go the 1959 Round Up.
I became a Girl Scout when I was 8 — also with the Cumberland Valley Council. I made 1st class Girl Scout when I was in the eighth grade. I am now married and live in Clarksville.
My daughter became a Daisy with me as her troop leader when she was in kindergarten. We are also in the Cumberland Valley Council. I am still her troop leader and she is about to enter her third year as a Brownie. She went to Resident camp for the first time this past summer. I have passed the torch to a fourth-generation Girl Scout.
Most of my fondest memories growing up were with Girl Scouts. I learned so many life skills and now I am passing that knowledge to the next generation. Continuing as a leader has allowed me to remain incredibly close to my daughter and given us so many memories together.
My hope is to take her and my troop into their Senior level and watch them develop into young women. I hope Girl Scouting does for them what it did for me. I still stay in touch with a best friend I met in Scouting. Her mother was one of my leaders. We have remained friends since I left Nashville over 25 years ago. She also has been a leader for many years. Her original troop has now graduated and she is looking forward to becoming a Service Unit Director.
Once a Girl Scout always a Girl Scout!!
