Fall 2004 Highlights

Start the troop year off right with the fall 2004 issue of LEADER magazine.

In this issue, read about leadership—what it is, how it is expressed, and how it is changing. For a lively discussion on being a leader who inspires others to do and be more than they ever thought possible, you'll want to read "Five Qualities Good Leaders Express." "A New Generation of Leaders" explores how young volunteers view leadership and voluntarism, and in "Why Volunteering Matters" you'll read how four Girl Scout volunteers, in the 18 to 29 age-range, feel about their roles as advisors.

"Congressional Advocacy Day 2004" reports on another kind of leadership. You'll get more details about the events of March 3, 2004, when nearly 600 people affiliated with Girl Scouts from across the country gathered in Washington, D.C., for a day of networking with members of Congress. The aim, as CEO Kathy Cloninger told the group, is that "Girl Scouts will be the first ally lawmakers seek when they craft policies related to girls."

"Goal Setting!" explains how you can teach girls to set and achieve goals, by "hearing" beyond their words to what they really want and why. "What's New in STUDIO 2BSM?" provides the most up-to-date listing of new Focus books and inserts to the Basics binder for girls 11 to 17—information advisors need to help girls reach their goals.

Two articles touch subjects near and dear to girls."Helping Young People Eat Smart" explains how to make Girl Scouts a place for girls to learn about healthy choices, vital in an era when one in four young people has a serious weight problem. "Making Dollars Count" highlights two financial literacy resources—STUDIO 2B Focus: Cashin' In: Affording What Really Matters in High School and Making Cents of Her Life, a book and interactive game on the STUDIO 2B Web site—that help teens navigate the high school cash crunch.

Finally, be sure to check out the regular features: Just for Volunteers offers a new take on uncovering resources in your community; News & Views synopsizes recent research reports; What's the Buzz? provides up-to-date information on new items and publications; and Leader to Leader offers advice to Girl Scout leaders from other Girl Scout leaders.
