Summer 2005 Highlights

Girl Scout councils are listening and responding to the innovative ways in which volunteers want to receive training, and you'll learn about it all in the summer 2005 LEADER.

"From Theory to Action" takes an in-depth look at the revolutionary ways four councils developed more accessible, adaptable, and versatile volunteer training. You'll discover how volunteers in Illinois are being trained after midnight and loving it; how volunteers in Tennessee now do in one day what it took two days to do last year; how trainers in Detroit deliver instruction directly to volunteers' doorsteps; and how in Kansas, leaders and girls learn about the outdoors together, but separately.

In our "Just for Volunteers" department, "What Do Volunteers Want?" describes the new nationwide effort to revitalize Girl Scouting by improving volunteer recruitment and support. The department invites all readers to email their ideas to the volunteerism "gap team" at volunteerismgapteam@girlscouts.org.

Practical, hands-on ideas abound in the summer issue, too. "20 Tips to Keep Middle School Girls in Girl Scouts" brims with fun, sensible ways adults can keep 11-, 12-, and 13-year-old girls interested in Girl Scouting with the flexibility, openness, and varied choices of STUDIO 2B. From specific advice, like "Plan 'Funky Friday' events once a month," to suggestions about theme gatherings and body image, this article will recharge anyone working with middle-schoolers.

"Help for Adults Who Help Girls" describes strategies leaders can use to reassure girls and get them talking about their reactions to world disasters, like Asia's recent tsunami and its ongoing aftershocks.

An expanded "Bulletin Board" highlights an array of girl activities and achievements from across the country, including Girl Scout troop and council responses to the tsunami. In "Leader to Leader," you'll get tips on the importance of goal-setting for girls in the STUDIO 2B age range. And in "News & Views" you'll get some startling statistics about after-school activities, TV fallout, and facts about teen sex.
