Fall 2006 Highlights
Based on the abundant and insightful responses to the recent LEADER magazine Reader Survey, you'll now find more articles from the Fall issue online. And you'll see them in PDF format, so that you can print them off for easy sharing.
The columns from National Board Chair Patricia Diaz Dennis and Chief Executive Officer Kathy Cloninger share their enthusiasm for the devotion to and love of the organization from the nearly one million adult volunteers. They also introduce the theme of Girl Scout Leadership Development as the foundation of all program development for the future.
"An Interview with Secretary Spellings," discusses U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings' partnership with GSUSA in focusing lawmakers on the importance of educating girls in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).
Two funded initiatives are highlighted: the uniquely ME! Dove/Unilever Self-Esteem program and "Girls and Cars," about the On the Road initiative sponsored by Firestone Complete Auto Care. The latter addresses the rite of passage and independence of teenagers when they begin driving, and the importance of car and road safety.
You are sure to enjoy the cover story, “Global Girl Scouting at GSUSA,” which includes an overview of worldwide opportunities girls have in Girl Scouts to broaden their understanding of other cultures and have a global voice. Lots of ideas will help leaders help girls find travel adventures to their liking, from how to register for a Girl Scout destination, to hostelling, to visiting the World Centers. The feature includes a number of subsections to show how GSUSA, together with other members of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), is enabling girls to take their rightful leadership roles in the world. "Our Rights, Our Responsibilities," is the theme for this triennium for WAGGGS. And an interview with a college-age Girl Scout who attended a WAGGGS conference on this theme will inspire you and the girls you work with.
