Online Banking

You probably spend a lot of time online, IMing, doing homework, or just surfing. But did you know you can do almost all of your banking from your computer, too? Online banking is really popular, because it’s quick, helps you make payments on time, and can even mean you avoid paying some fees. Plus, no stamps to worry about!

In most cases you can connect directly to your account through your bank’s website. Once you’re set up, you’re good to go. Feel like checking your account balance before you head out to the mall? Or late at night when you need a break from homework? No problem. You can log on 24/7.

One big perk is that you can easily move money from your savings account to your checking account online. Of course, you’ll still have to go to an actual bank or ATM to get cash. (But wouldn’t it be nice if your computer could spit out a few dollars once in a while when you really needed them?)

Safety Online

Banks use lots of protections, like firewalls and data encryption, to make sure no online snoopers or internet thieves see your information. But it’s still a good idea to make sure no one else (except maybe your parents) knows your access PIN code.

And keep your eyes out for internet scam emails that pretend they’re from your bank. They ask you to enter personal information—a scam that’s called "phishing".  No legitimate bank asks you for information they have already, like your social security number.
