Real Girls, Real Women contest winners announced September 20, 2005
Congratulations to everyone who participated in this summer’s Real Girls, Real Women contest. This summer, we received hundreds of inspiring stories and pictures, showing us once again how diverse, interesting, and supportive an environment Girl Scouts can be. The images captured the essence of Girl Scouting and the women's stories exemplified courage, character, and confidence. Our Grand Prize winner for the Volunteer category was Renelda Mack, who exemplifies leadership, character, and a commitment to giving back to the Girl Scout community.
From a girl member of the board to the President of the Council, Renelda Mack has brought a lot to Girl Scouting and to our community. As a girl member in 1979, Renelda was already demonstrating her commitment to and advocacy for girls. As a Senior Girl Scout, she was selected to represent our council at two Wider Opportunities. She continued to serve Girl Scouts as an Assistant Leader to a Girl Guide Company while studying in Scotland. Renelda came back to serve her home council, joining the board in 1998 and serving as President from 2002-2004. During her tenure, this very busy Civil Rights attorney founded an innovative Girl Scout troop at a regional detention center and helped girls explore careers in law. The Real Girls, Real Women contest celebrates all Girl Scouts (current and former members) across the country, who portray courage, confidence and character every day by putting the values of Girl Scouts into practice. Our 20 prize winners will each receive a new Web cam to share their digital pictures with friends and the four Grand Prize winners will receive a new digital camera for having the most creative and thoughtful entries.
