CEO
Council:
*Girl Scouts Heart of the South Job Summary The historic realignment of four Girl Scout councils representing two councils in western Tennessee and two in northern Mississippi occurred in June 2008. The transition to a new organizational structure was successfully implemented by council leadership; however, the need for the current CEO to relocate to the Atlanta area has created a vacancy. This presents an opportunity for a new candidate to play a key role in capitalizing on the dedicated work of the past year, towards bringing one voice to Girl Scouting in this large jurisdiction. The Chief Executive Officer is accountable for providing leadership, direction, and vision for the development and achievement of the organization’s mission and the council’s business strategy, in partnership with the council’s board of directors and senior management team. The CEO ensures that the business of the council is conducted in a manner consistent with corporate and charter requirements, as well as federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Key responsibilities include the stewardship of the council’s human, material, and fiscal assets, and responsibility for all hiring and employee/volunteer relations. In addition, this individual works in partnership with the council board to assure the council’s relevance in communities throughout the jurisdiction, promoting Girl Scout visibility and strengthening the public perception of the Girl Scout image. She/he will work in partnership with the national organization to promote Girl Scouting’s public policy agenda and to position Girl Scouts as a premier voice for girls. Regarding council surroundings, Memphis is the metropolitan hub of a five-state region known as the Mid-South. Home to more than a million residents, the greater Memphis area offers something for everyone. Residents enjoy a lower cost of living than the national average, four distinct seasons, and the hospitable atmosphere and pace of the “City of Good Abode.” There are numerous cultural opportunities in the area as well: Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Opera Memphis, Germantown Performing Arts Center, Bartlett Performing Arts Center, the Orpheum Theatre, and Beale Street, home of the blues. Museums include Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Dixon Gallery and Gardens, the National Civil Rights Museum, Pink Palace Museum, and the Children’s Museum of Memphis. The annual Memphis in May International Festival honors a different country each year and includes the Memphis Music Festival and Barbeque Contest. Outdoor enthusiasts have a wide range of activities at arm’s reach, including the chance to observe undisturbed wildlife in several preserves and parks. Memphis has a superb zoo; and hunting, fishing, and boating are all popular pastimes. Sports fanatics can choose among college and professional sports as well as numerous special athletic events. There are a number of colleges and universities in the area, including the University of Memphis, Rhodes College, the University of Tennessee Medical and Dental Colleges, and the Memphis College of Art. Girl Scouts Heart of the South serves 13,000-plus girls and 4,000-plus dedicated adult members. The council’s jurisdiction includes 37 counties in Mississippi, 21 in Tennessee, and 1 in Arkansas, and it maintains 12 office and camp facilities. Combined council employment is currently 55 full- and part-time staff, and the budget is $5.1 million. The council offers a competitive compensation package including medical, dental, and retirement plans, and seeks to fill this position by August/September 2009. Girl Scouting is strongly supportive of a multicultural society, and serves the interests of girl members from all communities. Individuals representative of our multicultural society are encouraged to explore this extraordinary opportunity.
