
Vice President, Communications
Summary of Position
The Vice President, Communications is responsible for developing strategies, tactics and content to support the organization’s internal and external communications initiatives. She/he ensures the development of corporate messaging architecture and competitive positioning, messaging and corporate image by being both hands on and delegating tasks to the communications team and external agencies to deliver collateral, website content and events, while driving a strategic campaign to promote the organization. Leads a cross-functional effort to create and implement innovative workplace communications strategies that inform and motivate the communications team. She/he partners with groups, departments or units to support broad initiatives with cross platform and integrated communications such as print, face-to-face and web-based vehicles. Creates the annual budgets and strategic goals for the department, and ensures that the appropriate integration occurs among departments and the team.
The Vice President, Communications oversees the development of communications tools that are distributed to Girl Scout councils and media nationwide, ensuring that they contain key consistent themes and messages that reflect the Girl Scout brand image. She/he will be responsible for crisis communications and interfaces with other GSUSA groups, departments or units, as appropriate to ensure that GSUSA’s communications needs and goals are being met properly. She/he builds/facilitates capability at the council level. Develops and implements communications initiatives that can be networked to councils. She/he will travel approximately 15% of the time.
Job Qualifications
• Minimum 10+ years’ experience in integrated Communications/Public Relations, or Marketing Communications with broad business background and strategies
• 5 years’ experience on a strategic marketing level or external communications managing 10-15 person teams
• Proven management experience and supervisory responsibilities including budget process, strategic and tactical planning, performance management, coaching and project management
• Proven training and facilitation skills
• Strong understanding of communication principles and industry trends. Crisis Communications a must
• Demonstrated problem solving skills and proven ability to take calculated risks and find innovative solutions
• Demonstrated hands on experience with the ability to multitask, handle pressure and meet deadlines
• Excellent written/verbal communications and interpersonal skills
• High level Microsoft Office Suite skills (including Project Manager) required
• Strategic thinker, highly organized, detail-oriented, with a collaborative work style and detail oriented
• Visionary, able to think strategically and provide feedback on trends to move the organization forward
• Travel approximately 15% of the time
• Bi-lingual a plus
• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing or related area, or equivalent relevant experience
