USAGSO Director's Corner

It's that time of year when we all say, "Where did the summer go"? Well, here it is fall again and GSUSA is ready for an exciting 2008 membership year (which actually began October 1, 2007).

Remember, you cannot have troop meetings if the girls are not registered. You'll be hearing a lot about Discover, Connect, and Take Action—the three keys to the New Girl Scout Leadership Experience to be rolled out in fall 2008.

I also want to remind you that the 2007 Annual Management & Financial Report (Form 711) was due June 15, 2007. If you have not sent it in, please do so immediately (e-mail or regular mail). Click http://www.girlscouts.org/who_we_are/global/overseas
/occ_forms_doc.asp
for copies of the form.

Last year, USAGSO training opportunities were delivered in Dhahran, Germany, France, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore, and members of the Global Training Team are prepared to offer even more training opportunities in 2008. For information on hosting a GTT conference or for an application to apply to be a member of  the Global Training Team, e-mail Sandy Thomas at sthomas@girlscouts.org.

So, welcome back—or if you're new to USAGSO, welcome aboard! We are here to help you in any way we can.

18 Girl Scouts Win Global Citizens Essay Contest
What it means to be a "global citizen" was the theme of an essay contest sponsored by Global Girl Scouting and, EF Educational Tours and Smithsonian Student Travel. The goal of the writing competition was for girls to reflect on how their Girl Scout experiences have broadened their horizons and increased their cultural awareness. Six girls (ages 15-17) won a trip to London and Paris and 12 girls (ages 12-14) won a trip to Washington, DC. The educational tours were not merely a reward for their winning essays, but a means for developing global ambassadors who will use the experience to positively impact their troops and communities. For more information, go to www.eftours.com and http://www.girlscouts.org/news/news_releases/ 2007/global_citizen_essay_contest.asp

Girl Scout Alumnae Association
The Girl Scout Alumnae Association, formed to reconnect women who were Girl Scouts or volunteers, launched on June 9, 2007, in Washington, DC, during Girl Scouts' 95th anniversary celebration. Throughout the day, thousands of former Girl Scouts visited designated areas to connect with those who attended the roundup reunions of the 1950s and 1960s, earned one or more of the highest awards in Girl Scouting, or participated in USA Girl Scouts Overseas.
Girl Scout history came to life with displays of Girl Scout dolls, handbooks, hats, and uniforms reflecting the 95 years of Girl Scouting.
Approximately 2,000 alumnae registered for the association and the information is being entered into a national database. To sign up, send a card, make a donation, or share your story, go to http://www.girlscouts.org
