Sustainability

Girl Scouts of the USA is committed to integrating environmental sustainability into our daily decisions and practices. Sustainability is important to us because it is ingrained in our values as an organization; it’s in our DNA to use resources wisely and make the world a better place.

Girl Scouts of the USA believes that climate change is one of the world’s most pressing challenges. The science is clear: human industrial activities produce greenhouse gases that trap heat in Earth’s atmosphere and lead to a warmer planet. According to NASA, industrial activities have raised atmospheric carbon dioxide levels from 280 parts per million to 412 parts per million in the last 150 years. This increase in atmospheric temperature causes significant environmental, health, socioeconomic, and financial consequences. A critical inflection point and positive step toward climate action, the 2015 Paris Agreement established a framework to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels while pursuing efforts to limit the increase to 1.5°C. Most scientists agree that an increase of 2°C above pre-industrial temperatures would detrimentally impact the global economy, food systems, and all life on Earth.

Our sustainability initiatives are therefore built upon our core values and our mission. We recognize that we must lead from within and identify ways to reduce our emissions and are thus regularly reevaluating our sustainability goals to align with protecting our environment. This entails a deep understanding of our current practices, gathering baseline data, implementing initiatives and best practices, and ensuring that key metrics are captured. We are proud of the efforts currently in progress, and we are excited to share these changes with our stakeholders.

First and foremost, we support our girls in improving their own communities. We are proud of our environmental badges and journeys that enable our girls to learn about the environment and ways to protect it. We regularly encourage and support local and national projects that focus on sustainability and environmental protection and justice. With climate change becoming a more pressing issue by the minute, we look to continuously empower our girls so they can become the next generation of change makers.

As we progress toward improving our operations, we recognize the importance of reducing our overall environmental footprint. It is essential that we reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and resource consumption if we are to play a role in slowing the pace of climate change. We understand that sustainability is a journey. Change will take time, but we are committed and determined. We encourage you to learn more about our sustainability progress and commitments by reviewing our Sustainability Briefing. We are excited to enact positive change in our communities and our planet.
