Brownies Get Smart About Money Management - Girl Scouts

Florida Troop Uses Cookie Money to Learn, Educate, and Give

The girls of Brownie Troop 1505 weren’t always the unstoppable cookie bosses they are today. Originally, the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida break-off troop started its journey with just $50 in the troop bank account.

But it’s come a long way, and this season, the girls set a cookie sale goal of 2,400 packages, or 150 per troop member—sounds like they were up for a challenge! The goal behind the goal? Raise enough money to help girls who might not otherwise be able to go to Girl Scout summer camp, as well as take a troop trip to Orlando parks to learn about wildlife (educational and fun!). The girls also plan to print posters of the “saving water” collage they made as part of the Wonders of Water Girl Scout Journey to hang up at recreation centers, parks, schools, and more—way to spread the good word, girls!

Troop leader and proud Girl Scout alumna Deborah Roberts explained that the girls maintained ultimate cookie focus throughout the season to reach their goals through a number of different activities:

  • Playing money management games to practice taking payments from cookie customers and giving them proper change
  • Roleplaying how to take pre-orders and sell at the booth
  • Playing cookie bingo, having a Girl Scout S’mores™ tasting, and approaching small businesses about setting up extra booths
  • Super powering their sales through the Digital Cookie® platform

These cookie entrepreneurs are somethin’ else—they can’t stop, won’t stop!

“The girls learned so much this season, but most importantly, they grew as a troop and individually,” Deborah said. “I believe we upheld the Girl Scout Promise in every way.”

Troop 1505, keep killin’ that cookie entrepreneur game, and there’s no telling what you’ll be able to accomplish in the years to come. We’ll be here with you every step of the way!
